పాలపుంత (Milky Way, ఈ పదానికి మూలం గ్రీకు భాష). ఇది ఒక నిషేధిత సర్పిలాకార గేలెక్సీ, ప్రాంతీయ గేలెక్సీ సమూహాల భాగం. వీక్షించగలిగే విశ్వములోని పాలపుంత, బిలియన్లకొద్దీ వున్న గేలెక్సీలలో ఒకటి.[4] ఈ గేలక్సీ మానవాళికొరకు ప్రాముఖ్యతను కలిగి వున్నది, కారణం మనం నివశిస్తున్న భూమి ఈ గేలక్సీలో వుండడమే. పాలపుంత గేలక్సీ లోని 'ఆకాశవీధి', భూమిపైనుండి, రాత్రివేళ, ఒక 'కాంతిపట్టీ'గా దర్శనం ఇస్తుంది.
